Mitra Geier
Mitra Geier - President
Advisor: Robert Tanguay          E-mail:

I am a third year student working in Dr. Robert Tanguay’s lab. My research focuses on using the zebrafish model to study the developmental effects of PAH exposure.  I was drawn to EMT by my interest in studying the interface of the environment and our health.  TEAM Tox is a great way to work with the community and the department to think about the broader impact of our research. Outside the lab, I enjoy hiking, road biking, and going to museums.

Mike Garland
Mike Garland - Vice President
Advisor: Robert Tanguay          E-mail:

I joined EMT as a PhD student in 2014 and work in Robert Tanguay’s lab. My research primarily focuses on how activation of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) by dioxins can inhibit epimorphic regeneration in zebrafish. TEAM Tox enables me to reach out to the community, share knowledge, and encourage public participation in science and education. When I’m not in lab I like to hike, mountain bike, and spend time with friends.

Advisor: Staci Simonich          E-mail

I am a third year Ph.D. student in Analytical Chemistry.  I was born and raised in Puerto Rico, where I received a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez.  My research is focused on studying the transformation of PAHs to oxygenated PAHs (oxy- and hydroxy-PAHs) during thermal remediation of creosote-contaminated soils.  Currently focusing in steam injections as the remedial technique, my goals are to determine what oxygenated PAHs are being formed during and after remediation, develop methods to quantify these analytes and determine the toxicity in soil before and after remediation.  I joined TEAM Tox because of the outreach activities, especially those directed to minorities.  On my spare time I enjoy spending time with family and friends, volunteering with kids at Life Community Church, practicing traditional archery, and just relaxing at home watching TV or working in the garden.

Advisor: Jennifer Field          E-mail:

I am first year graduate student in Toxicology, working under Dr. Jennifer Field. I am currently working on Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFASs) in consumer products. My hobbies include cooking, wine tasting, and anything crafty. I joined TEAM Tox to get more involved in the activities of the department and engage with the community.

Lindsay Denluck
Lindsay Denluck - APC Grad Representative
Advisor: Stacey Harper          E-mail:

I am a 2nd year student in Dr. Stacey Harper's laboratory researching nanotoxicology. I am excited to serve TeamTox as the APC representative and to use my interests in student development and teaching to help guide the future of the program. Outside the lab, you'll find me riding my horse, wine tasting, or enjoying the outdoors with my corgi.

Ben de Jourdan
Ben de Jourdan  - EAC Representative (Post doc)
Advisor: Bill Stubblefield          E-mail:

I am a postdoctoral researcher currently working in Dr. William Stubblefield’s Lab. My work involves providing toxicological assessments of various contaminants (e.g., metals, organics, radionuclides) for aquatic and terrestrial species of ecological and cultural concern in support of natural resource damage assessments. I grew up in North Bay, Ontario, Canada and completed my PhD at the University of Guelph. Researching at Oregon State University has provided valuable experiences, collaborations, and opportunities to explore the Pacific Northwest.

Justin Rewerts
Justin Rewerts - DSC Chair
Advisor: Jennifer Field          E-mail:

I am a second year graduate student in the Department of Chemistry working for Dr. Jennifer Field. Currently, I am studying the presence of volatile per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in fabric and textiles. I will also be working on a project to understand the ecological risk of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances by seeing their occurrence in biota. My interests outside of science include: swimming, hip-hop dance, and foreign language. I am very excited to be a part of TEAM Tox and hope to represent the department well through positively impacting our community through outreach.

Krista Barzen Hanson
Krista Barzen-Hanson - DSC CoChair
Advisor: Jennifer Field          E-mail:

I am a third year PhD candidate in Chemistry, working under Dr. Jennifer Field. My research focuses on the following two projects: the partitioning (sorption) of cationic and zwitterionic polyfluoroalkyl substances to soil and sediment, and discovery and mass balance of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in aqueous film-forming foams and groundwater. I'm excited to co-chair the committee that brings in scientists nominated by faculty and students.  Outside of research, I enjoy hiking, backpacking, gardening, and swing dancing.

Matt Slattery
Matt Slattery - Social Fundraising Chair
Advisor: Stacey Harper          E-mail:

After completing my undergraduate degree at Western Washington University, I joined OSU's EMT department in 2015. My research is focused around nanotoxicology, which deals with the unique properties of nanomaterials in the context of environmental and human health. When I'm not in the lab I spend my time exploring Oregon, playing music, and enjoying happy hour.

Laura Holden
Laura Holden - Outreach Chair
Advisor: Robert Tanguay          E-mail:

I am a first year student in the EMT department, currently rotating through different labs. I am primarily interested in science communication and risk assessment, particularly focusing on the public health outcomes of exposure to consumer products and materials we encounter every day. I am additionally interested in computational toxicology and our ability to transform important lab data into predictive models of human exposure that can serve as powerful tools for regulatory agencies and decision-makers alike. I am originally from the UK but grew up in Idaho and received my B.S. from The College of Idaho. My hobbies include traveling, going to concerts, biking and hiking and I enjoy being close to the beautiful Oregon Coast.

Yvonne Chang
Yvonne Chang- Outreach CoChair
Advisor: Susan Tilton          E-mail:

I am a first year EMT student interested in studying how chemicals in our environment can adversely affect proper gene expression and development. I am passionate about educational equity, and TEAM Tox Outreach is a great way to provide an inclusive community and increase engagement with students. I am a San Francisco native and have a B.S. in Cell Biology from the University of California, Davis. Some of my hobbies include road biking, Mexican food, and sunshine.
