Dr. Haendel’s research focuses on the use of ontologies - data structures that allow computational logical reasoning - to support data interrogation, integration, and mechanistic discovery. These ontologies are used especially to bridge basic research data and clinical phenotypic data. Her research also reaches into the science of science, representing scholarly contributions, data sharing policies and licensing, open science best practices, reproducibility, and patient generated data and patient inclusion in research. Most recently, she has been working on ontologies and standards for environmental data that can support integration of patient history data with environmental monitoring data in support of diagnostics and mechanism elucidation.
