Current research focuses on understanding the atmospheric transport and deposition of semi-volatile organic compounds to high elevation ecosystems. The research program seeks to understand the relative impact of current and historical Asian, Pacific Ocean, and North American sources on contamination at high elevations. Source region identification and 'age' are determined using air trajectories and the enantiomer ratios of chiral semi-volatile organic compounds. Sampling sites for the research include Okinawa, Cheeka Peak observatory, Marys Peak Observatory, Mt. Bachelor Observatory, and eight Western U.S. National Parks. Analytes of interest include organochlorine pesticides, current use pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers. The research utilizes chromatography, mass spectrometry, and novel methods of sample extraction and purification.
