Research and Outreach Activities
My main responsibilities at Oregon State University center around human health concerns related to chemical exposure, approaches to risk assessment and engaging diverse audiences in risk communication. I am particularly interested in pesticides, metals, biotoxins and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in drinking, source and wastewaters. The majority of my consultations with stakeholders across the Pacific Northwest are through my appointment with Extension Services.
Since 2007, I have been the director of the National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC), a cooperative agreement between Oregon State University and the USEPA. NPIC provides objective, science-based information on numerous pesticide-related issues to the public, government agencies and the medical community. I direct several talented scientists who are able to provide real-time information on complex issues. Visit NPIC at www.npic.orst.edu or call us at 1-800-858-PEST.
I direct the Community Outreach and Education Core of the Environmental Health Sciences Center (www.ehsc.oregonstate.edu/outreach). Our mission is to provide opportunities for people to reduce their risk and susceptibility to environmental facts that influence human health and disease. I am also part of OSU’s Superfund Research Project, funded through the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. I am a co-leader in the Research Translation Core and Community Engagement Core, which collaborates with the Umatilla Indian Reservation to help understand their risks to environmental contaminates from traditional practices.
